2013 Hawaii Business Top 250: Missing in Action

August, 2013

We Think These Companies Should Be in the Top 250

The Hawaii Business Top 250 provides a valuable resource for the entire state by tracking businesses in the Islands. Over its 30 years, it has provided an important historical record of individual business success and our broad economic sectors. Each year, it provides an up-to-date guide to our evolving economy and a useful indicator of emerging trends.

The Fortune 500 ranks publicly traded American companies and privately held companies for which revenues are publicly available. We use the same method for compiling our Top 250, but we also ask privately held local companies to voluntarily submit their annual gross sales figures to Hawaii Business. Hundreds do every year and for that we are grateful.

But many other privately held local companies, despite our pleas, do not provide their financials to us, and that is why they are not on the list. We suspect they are big enough to land on the Top 250, but lacking data, we don’t know where on the list they belong.

Many large mainland- or foreign-based organizations, such as Kaiser Permanente and JTB, supply us with data on their Hawaii operations and we include them on the list. But many other mainland and foreign firms that are major players in local business do not participate. And it is hard for us to compile the information on our own; annual reports for publicly traded companies reveal total revenues, but rarely do they break down revenue by states such as Hawaii. That leaves a big hole in our understanding of the Hawaii economy.

Sometimes, companies tell Hawaii Business they will not reveal their financials for competitive reasons, but, usually, companies will not explain why they are not participating in the Top 250.

To help fill these blanks in the Top 250, we are publishing this list of “Missing in Action” companies. We think they belong on the 2013 Top 250. As you can tell from the list, many of these companies have been on the list in previous years, but did not participate this year.

If your company is on this list, please share your data with us next year when we contact you. To ensure you will be contacted, email Managing Editor Jason Ubay atjasonu@hawaiibusiness.com.
