Finding Comfort in Warranty and Service Centers

Expert Recommendations for Your Auto Needs:

There’s nothing like buying a new or pre-owned vehicle. No matter which brand or model you choose, buying an automobile is a big investment and commitment. But the journey doesn’t end there. It’s actually just the beginning.

Before you start your new adventure on the road, consider purchasing an extended warranty service plan from the dealership. It will give you peace of mind and it may also save you hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in costs normally associated with maintenance and repairs. Most major repairs happen after the original factory warranty expires. Don’t let unexpected auto breakdowns sneak up on you and your checkbook. Prepare for the future by planning ahead with Hawaii Business magazine’s 2011 Executive Auto Guide.

Finding the Right Coverage

Congratulations! You’ve purchased a new or pre-owned vehicle. Now what? It’s time to consider your options and find the right coverage that fits your needs.

Many auto buyers protect themselves and their pocketbooks by investing in extended-warranty plans. While all new and many used vehicles include a warranty from the factory, auto buyers still need to carefully consider their options for the future. If you are planning to keep your car for many years, you may want to consider extending the factory’s warranty.

Comprehensive warranty and service packages can help cover the expense of parts and labor costs involved to fix unexpected repairs. Car dealerships offer different terms and coverage. Some manufacturers might cover certain repairs, while others may choose not to cover them at all. Be sure to gather all the information and read the fine print before signing up for a warranty-package plan. It’s important to understand the conditions and the length of your warranty coverage.

At Your Service

In addition to signing up for an extended warranty or service package, it is also important for consumers to schedule regular maintenance check-ups. Standard oil and filter changes help prolong your engine’s life, while routine tire inspection and rotation will help to ensure your vehicle maintains its safety and performance. It’s also crucial to check the tire’s inflation pressure and maintain proper wheel alignment.

Keeping your vehicle running in top shape will also help provide a safer ride and prevent it from breaking down on the side of the road. As a driver, it is your responsibility to keep track of taking your vehicle in for service and maintenance. Failure to do so can interfere with the vehicle’s performance capabilities, safety and reduce fuel efficiency. Any type of work done on the vehicle must be made by factory-authorized technicians. In certain cases, having another company outside of the dealership provide maintenance on your vehicle can potentially void the warranty coverage.

One of the benefits of purchasing the extended–warranty package is having access to the dealership’s service center and auto-repair shop. It’ll eliminate your worry of needing to find professional technicians who know how to fix and service your vehicle. Another added benefit is often the access and replacement of genuine parts from the factory. Read your benefits package carefully to learn exactly what you are entitled to as a preferred-warranty customer. Some service centers also provide free shuttle services and loaner cars to make the experience as easy as possible. Most dealerships understand that convenience is often the key to a satisfied and happy customer.

Finding the right warranty coverage and maintenance plan can be stressful, but there’s help. In this edition of Hawaii Business magazine’s 2011 Executive Auto Guide, you’ll find expert recommendations for all of your auto needs. We’ve asked several professionals from Hawaii’s top dealerships for their advice about extended-warranty plans. They reveal how drivers find comfort in these warranty packages and the valuable maintenance service centers have been providing for many years.

The Nissan service center in Kaneohe is a high-tech facility designed to help prevent breakdowns and other problems your car may have.

According to King Windward Nissan’s general manager Bill Mickelsen, the company sells extended warranties from the Nissan factory, such as the Nissan Security Plus. It does not use third-party companies to provide extended warranties.

“We sell the warranty that’s backed by Nissan,” Mickelsen says. “It provides the best coverage anywhere you go in the United States. You don’t have to worry about anything – just come in and we’ll take care of your car. Using Nissan Security Plus also expedites the claim process. There’s no waiting period.”

An Extended Service Contract is offered with most pre-owned inventory, providing an additional safeguard on your vehicle, protecting owners from costly and unexpected repairs. Many may use the term, “extended warranty,” however, warranties cover repairs on a vehicle for a determined period of time and mileage provided directly from the manufacturer. Extended Service Contracts provide coverage on the major components of a car after all the warranties have expired.

Extended Service Contracts are available for an additional cost. The contract varies in coverage based on the age of the vehicle, mileage and years of coverage. There are many plans available, including a zero-deductible option.

Extended Service Contracts can be purchased when you buy the car or further along in your ownership. The contracts are offered through an independent company. SAAB Hawaii will communicate with the provider to cover the repairs conducted in its service department.

The other alternative SAAB Hawaii offers to consumers is the availability of Certified Pre-Owned Coverage on select SAAB vehicles. While the coverage is similar to that of an Extended Service Contract, the major difference is that the coverage is provided directly from the manufacturer, as opposed to an independent company. With both options, the major mechanical systems of your vehicle are covered, excluding only what are considered wear and tear items, such as tires, upholstery and light bulbs, as well as routine maintenance on you vehicle, including oil changes.

Fletcher “Ted” Jones presides over one of the most successful luxury automobile dealer groups in the United States. Ted has been credited with pioneering a revolutionary approach in which “guests,” not “customers,” are treated with the same level of service you would expect from a five-star hotel. The son of an industry legend, Fletcher Jones Sr., Ted manages an automotive retail empire that spans four states and 17 dealerships. Today, some of these dealerships in Hawaii include Jaguar Honolulu, Land Rover Honolulu and Porsche of Hawaii.

As part of the Fletcher Jones family of fine dealerships, Jaguar/Land Rover Honolulu and Porsche of Hawaii offer brand new cars, along with used cars, trucks and SUVs made and designed by top manufacturers. Its sales staff will help make your dreams come true by finding the new or used luxury car you have been searching for.

For many years, the financial staff have offered expert advice for those seeking a great car loan or lease. But the outstanding service doesn’t stop there. Drivers can come in and take advantage of the service provided by knowledgeable and professional service technicians. They also offer service contracts to all drivers.

“The service contracts we promote help to enhance their long-term ownership,” says general manger David Pedersen. “This gives them peace of mind. When they buy the service contract through us, we facilitate all the phone calls and paperwork on the client’s behalf so the process is simple and effortless for them.”

Besides providing drivers with a sense of security, service contracts also help to minimize future financial costs.

“We often ask our customers, ‘How long will you own this vehicle and how many miles will you drive?’ This information helps us determine the cost-effectiveness of the contract. Certain service contracts would cover the engine, transmission and virtually everything else on the car. While it is mostly about cost-savings, equally as important is the convenience factor for our clients,” says Pedersen.

The analogy he likes to use is health insurance: “A new car is similar to when we’re younger. When we’re young and healthy, the cost of insurance is a lot less in the beginning. The same concept applies to cars.

If someone is considering keeping the car past the factory warranty, we always recommend they purchase the service contract because it will save them money in the long run.”

If drivers change their mind, they have options with their service plans.

“Let’s say their automotive wants or needs change. The plans we offer are cancelable,” Pedersen says, “so they can get a pro-rated refund on the unused portion.”

According to Pedersen, the plans are also transferable. If parents want to give the car to their children, they can transfer the service contract over without worrying about future mechanical problems.

“It’s a win-win-win situation,” says Pedersen. “You have the coverage if you need it, you can get a pro-rated refund if you don’t, or you can transfer to a family member or private party if the opportunity arises. The vehicle will still be covered by the service contract but under a new driver.”
