Congratulations! You’ve purchased a new or pre-owned vehicle. Now what? It’s time to consider your options and find the right coverage that fits your needs.
Many auto buyers protect themselves and their pocketbooks by investing in extended-warranty plans. While all new and many used vehicles include a warranty from the factory, auto buyers still need to carefully consider their options for the future. If you are planning to keep your car for many years, you may want to consider extending the factory’s warranty.
Comprehensive warranty and service packages can help cover the expense of parts and labor costs involved to fix unexpected repairs. Car dealerships offer different terms and coverage. Some manufacturers might cover certain repairs, while others may choose not to cover them at all. Be sure to gather all the information and read the fine print before signing up for a warranty-package plan. It’s important to understand the conditions and the length of your warranty coverage.
At Your Service
In addition to signing up for an extended warranty or service package, it is also important for consumers to schedule regular maintenance check-ups. Standard oil and filter changes help prolong your engine’s life, while routine tire inspection and rotation will help to ensure your vehicle maintains its safety and performance. It’s also crucial to check the tire’s inflation pressure and maintain proper wheel alignment.

Honolulu Ford is pleased to offer the official manufacturer extended warranty from Ford Motor Company. These extended service plans (ESP) are honored at every Ford and Lincoln dealer nationwide. The ESP contracts are competitively priced and offer a wide range of plans, starting from just the basic coverage, such as the PowertrainCare to the top-of-the-line PremiumCare service plan. The Ford ESP plans are available on new Ford and Lincoln vehicles and just about all makes and models when purchased used.

Mickelsen says King Windward Nissan also offers the Nissan Security Plus Gold Preferred coverage, which mirrors the factory warranty and extends the same coverage for a longer period of time.
King Windward Nissan has also taken important steps to support its commitment to providing the essential resources to Nissan’s new 100-percent electric vehicle, the 2011 Leaf.
“We sent a technician to a four-day specialized training class in Ontario, Calif.” says Mickelsen. “We also sent our service director and a sales specialist for training on the Leaf. There’s also a Leaf app that is available for smartphones. We want to make sure we provide everything we can for all of our customers from Leaf-related information and services to free shuttle services and offering loaner cars.”

All 2011 Mercedes-Benz vehicles come with a standard four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which is standard among European luxury brands. All warranty items are covered 100 percent for parts and the cost of labor. Within the first year of ownership or 12,000 miles (which ever occurs first), tires, wheel alignment and balancing, brake discs and pads, glass, wiper blades and inserts are covered. All warranty work must be done at an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer. In addition to the four-year/50,000-mile warranty, Mercedes-Benz customers enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having “on-call” roadside assistance available 24 hours a day.
All Mercedes-Benz vehicles require service only once a year or every 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Certified Mercedes-Benz technicians are committed to providing you and your vehicle with the best service. It also provides complimentary shuttle service to and from the office. Mercedes-Benz customers also have the option of choosing from a fleet of loaner cars and will let you borrow one of its cars while your vehicle is being serviced.

An Extended Service Contract is offered with most pre-owned inventory, providing an additional safeguard on your vehicle, protecting owners from costly and unexpected repairs. Many may use the term, “extended warranty,” however, warranties cover repairs on a vehicle for a determined period of time and mileage provided directly from the manufacturer. Extended Service Contracts provide coverage on the major components of a car after all the warranties have expired.
Extended Service Contracts are available for an additional cost. The contract varies in coverage based on the age of the vehicle, mileage and years of coverage. There are many plans available, including a zero-deductible option.
Extended Service Contracts can be purchased when you buy the car or further along in your ownership. The contracts are offered through an independent company. SAAB Hawaii will communicate with the provider to cover the repairs conducted in its service department.
The other alternative SAAB Hawaii offers to consumers is the availability of Certified Pre-Owned Coverage on select SAAB vehicles. While the coverage is similar to that of an Extended Service Contract, the major difference is that the coverage is provided directly from the manufacturer, as opposed to an independent company. With both options, the major mechanical systems of your vehicle are covered, excluding only what are considered wear and tear items, such as tires, upholstery and light bulbs, as well as routine maintenance on you vehicle, including oil changes.

If drivers change their mind, they have options with their service plans.
“Let’s say their automotive wants or needs change. The plans we offer are cancelable,” Pedersen says, “so they can get a pro-rated refund on the unused portion.”
According to Pedersen, the plans are also transferable. If parents want to give the car to their children, they can transfer the service contract over without worrying about future mechanical problems.
“It’s a win-win-win situation,” says Pedersen. “You have the coverage if you need it, you can get a pro-rated refund if you don’t, or you can transfer to a family member or private party if the opportunity arises. The vehicle will still be covered by the service contract but under a new driver.”
