President and Chief Executive Officer Y. Hata & Co. Ltd
You might call Laurence Vogel’s office “versatile.” Besides serving as the headquarters of Y. Hata & Co. Ltd., a Hawaii-based food distribution company, the smallish office also doubles as the Danish Consulate in Hawaii. However, Vogel’s wife just calls it tacky.
“She really doesn’t like my antique hula-girl lamp and she wants me to throw away my airplane collection,” says Vogel. The lamp and the plane collection (Vogel has a small replica of every airliner that he has flown on, everything from a DC-3 to the Concorde.) are old friends, having shared his office when he was head of Duty Free Shoppers. There is also a collection of photographs from the coffee table book, A Day in the Life of Hawaii hanging on a wall, and two large tapestries from Bali grace Y. Hata’s outer office. An ornate conference table fills a nearby meeting room.
Vogel’s previous office was about three times the size of his present one. But although it might be a little crowded, he says he likes this one just fine.
