What our readers have to say

RESIDENT ADVISER

I read with interest (Leadership Lessons), "When Enough is Enough: Sustainable Tourism" in the December, 2005, issue of Hawaii Business.

In general, I agree with your observations and conclusions. In the past couple of years, however, I have noted that on, Kauai at least, a growing component of tourism has been the part time resident. Together with time-share visitors, part-time residents seem to have smoothed out the otherwise seasonal flow of visitors and upgraded the quality of the visitor in terms of spending ability.

We also have a home in Naples, Florida, an economy that is even stronger in "resident tourism" than is that of Hawaii. Southwest Florida has become much stronger economically, I think as a result.

Now the good/bad of resident tourists is that they take a greater interest in local affairs than do traditional tourists. You'll have to decide whether that is advantageous or not.

IT TAKES A TEAM

I appreciated being part of the February edition of Hawaii Business recognizing the Top 20 Financial Advisors in Hawaii. It's terrific to be highlighted (I was #4), but, I must say, that being a professional in this difficult business–as emotions go one way, and the market goes the other–is not something one does alone.

WAY COOL

Just a "shout out" to you on a job well done with the cover story on ChipIn [March 2006]. Double-cool idea on following their progress as well. That's a pretty gutsy move on your folks' part and I commend you on it. I'll be reading future issues that much more closely. Keep it going!
