If a golf club represents a car, and the golfer a driver, the club’s shaft symbolizes the vehicle’s engine, says Johnny Eusebio, PGA head professional at the Big Island’s Waikoloa Beach Resort.

According to Eusebio, determining the shaft specifications for a golfer’s style of play, swing and comfort level is paramount when buying, or getting “fitted” for, new clubs. That’s because today’s golfers can choose from a wide variety of materials, ranging from rigid steel to graphite, which is very flexible and requires more control.

Knowing one’s style of play and comfort level is important when selecting from stock clubs, or working with a certified club fitter. That information will determine the club’s basic characteristics, such as flexibility, weight, as well as more complicated physics-related properties.

Golf professionals and certified club fitters have computerized technology that can pinpoint the correct materials and settings for club specifications based on what feedback a golfer provides in relation to playing habits and results of certain swings and situations.

Much like taking care of a car, getting a club tuneup may be just the thing a golfer needs to achieve optimal performance.
