2013 Hawaii Business Top 250: Pohai Nani
Pohai Nani, in Hawaiian, means “Surrounded by Beauty.” The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society Pohai Nani certainly lives up to its name. Located high on a hill, Pohai Nani offers sweeping views of the sparkling blue Pacific Ocean and the plush greenery of the Koolau Mountains that gracefully frame the edges of Kaneohe Bay. In fact, some residents say, “It’s like living in paradise.
Established in 1964, Good Samaritan Society Pohai Nani, a nonprofit retirement community, offers a continuum of care for its residents, including Housing with Services, Assisted Living, Care Homes, and a 5-Star Skilled Nursing Facility on the Windward side of Oahu. The mission: “…to share God’s love in word and deed by providing shelter and supportive services to older persons and others in need,” believing that, “In Christ’s Love, Everyone is Someone,” guides their remarkable staff to serve residents with an unprecedented level of care and comfort. For many employees, working at Pohai is more than a job. It’s a calling.
Providing a quality of life emphasizing hospitality, where people love and care for one another, gives the residents of Pohai Nani a true essence of being valued, loved and at peace. True to form, this feeling is not only emulated by the majestic landscape, but more so through the dedication and heartfelt desire of the staff to create a strong bond with each resident.
In addition to the intimate staff-resident relationship, Pohai Nani’s Wellness Program offers a myriad of specialized classes and activities, and an innovative approach to comprehensive fitness for all residents. Goals of the fitness program are to develop and provide programs that enhance health and fitness, increase physical activity and socialization opportunities, key elements in long-term health and happiness.
Pohai Nani also incorporates a strong sense of community through the hosting of VFW, Rotary and Lions Clubs, an ecumenical church service, senior-focused training and learning seminars and community based wellness activities. Community involvement anchors Pohai Nani as an ambassador for positive communal stewardship.
The Hallmark Values of being Christ Centered, Resident Centered, Staff Centered and Community Centered has positioned Pohai Nani as a sustained leader in the retirement and senior-care community. Celebrating their 50th Anniversary in January 2014, these values continue to allow Pohai Nani to evolve and forge deeper roots as one of Hawaii’s Top 250.
