2013 Hawaii Business Top 250: Alternate Energy Inc.

PV in Hawaii? Alternate Energy Shines

Bruce Ekimura, Owner & Founder

According to Greentech Media Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association, a record 108,700 kilowatts (108.7 MW) of photovoltaic power were installed in Hawaii in 2012—compared to only 14,000 kilowatts (14 MW) in 2009.

There has never been a better time to go solar. But given the level of interest and the financial incentives, there are a lot of new providers jumping on the bandwagon. Ten years ago there were about 20 companies providing PV system design and installation in Hawaii. Today there are more than 250.

Alternate Energy Inc., is a quality solar PV company that’s committed for the long haul. Owner Bruce Ekimura and his father started out as plumbers. As solar water heating became more popular, they saw the shift that was destined to take place. The family founded Alternate Energy Inc. in 1993 and they’ve grown slowly and steadily over the past 20 years, naturally becoming frontrunners in Hawaii’s PV revolution and the state’s number one residential PV provider. AEI recently moved to brand new headquarters in Mapunapuna, where customers will soon be able to see a variety of solar systems in place and actually generating energy in real time in what will be the first working rooftop solar demo/display in Hawaii.

“What drives us is the knowledge that more high-quality solar installations means less dependence on expensive oil and electricity, which means Hawaii families and businesses are keeping more of their hard-earned dollars right here at home,” says Bruce. “Doing solar right is the right thing to do for our beautiful state.”

That’s why all of AEI’s installers are AEI employees, not subcontractors. The company takes full responsibility for every installation, no matter how large or small. They offer highest quality materials and systems (such as premium Mitsubishi panels) direct from the manufacturer. Training is in-depth and ongoing, with Mitsubishi technicians traveling to AEI headquarters several times a year to provide hands-on updates on product knowledge and installation technique. And AEI backs up each job with warm, friendly customer service and solid, generous warranties.

AEI customers say it gives them peace of mind to know that they are working with a longtime, established local company when they make this important environmental investment for their home or business.

Today, AEI is prouder than ever to be one of Hawaii’s oldest residential and commercial solar energy companies, locally owned and operated from day one.

AEI is headquartered at 803 Ahua Street, Honolulu HI 96819, with offices on Maui at 60 East Wakea Ave. #109, Kahului 96732.

Telephone (808) 842-5853; on the Web at www.AlternateEnergyHawaii.com.
