Parting Shot: Refueling Planes at Island Air

Honolulu ground crews refuel Island Air planes after every arrival. Jet fuel is piped from Sand Island to “fuel pits” on the tarmac. From there, hydrant carts — essentially big pumps on wheels — pump the fuel to the planes. Here, Lambert Castillo is about to connect a cart’s supply line to a pipe hidden in the fuel pit. It takes about 10 minutes to fill the fuel tanks of an ATR 72 turboprop.
