Honolulu Orchid Society, Inc. 73rd Annual Orchid Show Dazzling displays of Hawaii’s best orchids will amaze and delight at the Honolulu Orchid Society’s “Galaxy of Orchids” — its 73rd Annual Orchid Flower and Plant Show — on October 5-7, 2012, at the Washington Middle School Cafeteria. New to this year’s show will be collections of rare jewels orchid species, some of which are often endangered in their native habitat, and bulbophyllums, with blooms that astonish (and sometimes awfully scented). The best blooms from six orchid societies will be competing for trophies, and flowering plants and seedlings. Both easy-to-care-for orchid hybrids and species will also be available for sale by orchid vendors from Oahu and the outer islands. Expert growers will lead demonstrations of their best practices for coaxing the best flowers from cattleyas, dendrobiums (yes, also focusing on the sweet-scented island favorite honohono), phalaenopsis, and other orchids. A “plant doctor” will attend to your problem plant; but if you suspect disease, please bring the poor thing in a sealed plastic bag. Tools and supplies for keeping your plants healthy and happy will also be available. Our 2012 show is open to the public, free of charge: October 5 Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM October 6 Saturday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM October 7 Sunday 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM** Plant sales close at 2:00 PM on Sunday Five classes — on general orchid culture, honohono (twice), dendrobium and cattleya — will be held at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. Sunday.
