Growth for the Golden Years

It’s hard to believe that the Arcadia family of companies began with a single congregate living residence whose property was originally the site of a single family home.

In 1909, the territorial governor of Hawaii, Walter F. Frear, and his wife, Mary Dillingham Frear, called Arcadia home. They named the residence after its namesake in Greece, which is known for its rural simplicity and peacefulness. After the Frears passed away, they left their home to Punahou School, which, along with Central Union Church and the Dillingham Corp., decided in 1964 to convert the three acres into a retirement residence.

The first residents moved into the distinguished retirement dwelling in 1967. Through a nurturing culture whose reputation soon spread, the Arcadia residence took on a life of its own.  Just twenty years after the first residents moved in, Arcadia became a separate, non-profit corporation and just five years after that purchased the property’s fee-simple interest from Punahou.

With a growing senior population in Hawaii, what was once a single-dwelling

company has grown into a family of companies all driven with the goal to provide senior services and care to the community’s Kupuna.

Now, the Arcadia family of companies manages more than 400 employees which  includes Arcadia, as well as 15 Craigside, a new Continuing Care Retirement Community in Nu`uanu similar to Arcadia, together with a holding company, a foundation, two adult day care programs, and a home health agency.

What sets this company apart is its true adherence to lifetime care and the treatment of residents as family. “I think what our residents come to love about Arcadia and 15 Craigside is being part of a caring community,” says CEO Emmet White.

It’s no wonder that Arcadia’s 44 years in business have earned it a stellar reputation and allowed it to keep on growing. And it’s not just daily life that the team can help with, Arcadia prides itself on holistic care. “This includes long-term assistance,” says White, “and no one is ever asked to leave Arcadia or 15 Craigside should a resident exhaust his or her assets through no personal fault.”

Another secret to the company’s success lies in a strong emphasis on its core values. “Our core values have helped those who serve, and those whom we serve, alike, to sustain the mission and work we do,” says White. “Those values include being humble, understanding, gentle, just, merciful, honest, peaceful and faithful.”
