Giving Back, Getting Ahead
Dr. Cecile Sebastian, DDS, knew she wanted to be a dentist since she was 15 years old. With her own dentist serving as her role model, Sebastian pursued a biology degree from Purdue University and later earned her dental degree from the Northwestern University School of Dentistry.
Shortly after beginning her private practice in 1992, Sebastian purchased a practice from a dentist in downtown Honolulu, who was retiring. “I literally fell in love with the office and the view of Tamarind Park,” Sebastian says of the coveted vistas. “The view from our office is very peaceful and calming for both the patients and our office team.”
However, the view is just one of the things that ensures a stress-free visit for Sebastian’s patients. Sebastian places a strong emphasis on continued education and implementation of advanced technology. Her recent acquisitions of the Cerec CAD-CAM machine that mills crowns and bridges in minutes and the Orthophos XG-3D, a dental CAT scan that minimizes radiation to patients, shows her commitment to comfort and innovation. Specializing in cosmetic and implant dentistry, Sebastian and her team continually update their skills by attending various seminars and workshops to enhance their skills. While the minimum requirements to maintain a dental license in Hawaii is only 8 hours per year, in 2011 alone, Dr. Sebastian has earned more than 300 hours of continuing education.
Sebastian’s vast knowledge of innovative dental practices has made her a leader in the field. A multiple recipient of HONOLULU Magazine’s Best Dentist recognition, Sebastian has also received the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award in the Individual Businessperson category and the Top High-Tech-Leader Award from Technology News Network and Pacific Technology Foundation.
But what is most impressive is that with all of these awards and recognitions, Sebastian continues to be a steward for service to the community. For years, she and her team have been offering free informational talks to groups, organizations and health fairs, as well as sponsoring two annual events including a food drive at Tamarind Park and the Hawaii Future Dentist Symposium, co-sponsored by Patterson Dental. “Giving back to the community is an important part of the practice,” Sebastian says.

She served as a volunteer for the Aloha Medical Mission from 2005 – 2008 and continues to volunteer for Donated Dental Services, which offers free dental services to the handicapped and needy. She offers free annual screenings for children through Give Kids a Smile, sponsored by the American Dental Association, and she also serves as a healthcare coalition member for the Hawaii Food Bank.
But while her service to the community remains a large part of her work, Sebastian also embraces an adherence to doing what she can to best serve her patients. “There is no secret to success other than doing what is best for the patient and what we would want for ourselves, “ Sebastian says.
