A Hawaiian Tradition

With a name that has become synonymous with the classic, Hawaiian Aloha shirt, the Reyn Spooner apparel brand has been gracing the scene since 1956, when it was originally known as Spooners of Waikiki. Back then, it was a much smaller operation that specialized in custom swim trunks. “Some of them were even made out of the cloth rice sacks of the time,” says Reyn Spooner CEO Kirk Hubbard.

Reyn's founder Reyn McCullough started the store on California’s Catalina Island in 1949. He soon brought his first retail store to Hawaii in Honolulu’s Ala Moana Center as one of its original tenants. “Reyn worked closely with Spooners of Waikiki, and they decided to collaborate into [clothing brand] Reyn Spooner in 1962,” Hubbard says. Today, in addition to their own Hawaii retail stores, the apparel brand Reyn Spooner can be found throughout the U.S. in specialty and better department stores, internationally as well as online.

How has the line managed to stay on top after more than 50 years? Classic design with modern adaptations. The company originally created a pullover reverse print shirt with a button down collar, which appealed immediately to the Hawaii businessman and to the surfer for its faded out authentic look. “We call this unique blend of the traditional, bright Hawaiian shirt from the 1950s with a conservative, American preppy style, “Hawaiian Traditionals™”, says Hubbard.   To keep them grounded, collaborations with local artists and designers such as Dietrich Varez and Alfred Shaheen are key as well as maintaining some of the manufacturing in-house in Hawaii at their Iwilei headquarters.

The result is a timeless shirt with many interpretations, depending where you are. The shirt remains a staple in Hawaii, while in California, it’s considered part of classic surfing and sailing attire. On the East Coast, many consider it to be Hawaii sportswear, and in Japan, it's designer Hawaiian Americana.

With a global consumer base, Reyn Spooner stays relevant by constantly adapting while also remaining true to its established, traditional appeal. In order to remain a constant among its consumers, the brand has begun targeting a younger base. “Recently, we have been spending our time reintroducing our brand to a new generation of customers,” Hubbard says. “Last year, we introduced our modern collection, in addition to the classic, which promises a return to our roots with an updated fit, fabrication, color and style.”

With the forward-thinking, innovative team at Reyn Spooner, the brand will remain as much a timeless staple as the Aloha shirt we have grown to love. Look for some exciting news from them next year!
