For a local company to be successful for more than seven decades and attain a leadership position in its industry, it must be an organization that consumers can always trust to deliver quality service and value. Such is the case with the Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA).

For 73 years, HMSA has provided families with access to quality, affordable health care. At the heart of HMSA are its core values.  Trust is one of them, and it extends to members, providers, employers, the community, and HMSA employees.

“The spirit of trust permeates the culture of HMSA,” says Robert P. Hiam, HMSA president and CEO. Hiam, who has been with HMSA for 40 years, believes that trust is the result of doing the right thing at the right time for the right reason.

“Trust is defined as confidence in the honesty, integrity, and reliability of an organization,” says Hiam. “Open and honest communication is essential to the development of trust.  In today’s business world, it’s called transparency. But at HMSA, it’s always been about being fair, honest, and ethical.”

Hiam says that HMSA is honored to be Hawaii’s first choice in health plans.
