2012 Corporate Anniversary: Maryknoll School

“Creating 21st century learners, leaders and citizens of character”

Celebrating our 85th anniversary this year, Maryknoll School is Oahu’s largest coeducational, Catholic School serving students from kindergarten through grade 12. We enroll more than 1,400 students of diverse ethnic, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our Catholic learning environment is designed to support all our students, half of whom are not Catholic. Since 2007, 100% of our graduating seniors have gone on to higher education.

At Maryknoll, we instill in our students the value of social responsibility and academic rigor. Our motto, Noblesse Oblige (“to whom much is given, much is expected”) is the core of our mission at Maryknoll School. Within the context of the Catholic tradition of education, Maryknoll School educates young people in Hawaii about the importance of giving back to their community and prepares them to make long-lasting contributions to society.

The vision that is Maryknoll School began with a young priest and six Maryknoll Sisters. When Maryknoll School opened its doors in 1927, there were 93 boys and 77 girls. The six Maryknoll Sisters, who had arrived from New York just four days before opening day, comprised the first faculty. The school was a one-story wooden frame building on Dole Street, containing only four classrooms. In 1931, the first freshman class was enrolled and in 1935 the first thirteen graduates of the only Catholic, co-educational high school in Hawaii received their diplomas. The high school was housed at Dole Street until 1948, at which time it was moved to the former MacDonald Hotel on Punahou Street. In August 1953, the present high school facility was dedicated.

Honolulu had a number of Catholic schools at the time, excellent private schools administered by congregations of religious men and women from Europe and patterned on European values and ideas existed. The American Sisters, however, believing that education of choice should be open to everyone, set out to establish a co-educational, parish school. Families in the parish, as well as other families desiring to have their children educated in the American way, were invited to send their children to the school.

Today, Maryknoll is a 21st century school with a state-of-the-art gym, high tech infrastructure, modern classrooms and innovative curriculum. Our 150 faculty and staff, many of whom are Maryknoll School alumni, are dedicated professionals who strive every day to have a positive impact in the lives of our keiki.
