Swinerton Builders

Teamwork is the foundation of our success,” says Swinerton Builders Vice President and Division Manager George Ehara. As part of a nationwide 100 percent employee-owned general contracting company, Swinerton’s Hawaii office recognizes the importance of nurturing teamwork dedicated to excellence.

“Our goal is to be the preferred builder and trusted partner of our clients. As employee-owners, our people have a vested interest in our company success by developing a great team whose members have shared values and enjoy working together. Our people are what make our company one of Hawaii’s best places to work,” explains Ehara of Swinerton’s management team of 70 and its workforce of 130 craft workers, including carpenters, laborers, masons and operators. In 2012, Swinerton Builders was named one of Hawaii’s Best Places to Work.

Like many other Hawaii construction companies, Swinerton, which specializes in the medical, hospitality, federal and retail markets, has faced challenges in the recent economic downturn. Ehara credits the company’s reputation for well-constructed projects – a reflection of its workforce’s craftsmanship – for earning consistent client trust and for its revenue growth from $0 in 2003, when the company re-established its Hawaii office, to approximately $140 million in 2011.

Swinerton Hawaii has the backing of a parent company ranked in the Top 25 U.S. General Contractors by Engineering News-Record. The Swinerton Family of Companies provides financial stability, bonding capacity and access to the latest construction technology for Hawaii clients. As part of a national company initiative with over 75 LEED projects completed across the country, the Hawaii office is one of the state’s largest green builders with over 25 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff.

“We foster a workplace environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, an entrepreneurial spirit and leadership qualities,” says Ehara. Swinerton hires carefully and looks for potential employees as much for their shared values – such as integrity, humility, a desire to serve others and a commitment to excellence – as for their technical ability, he adds. With a strong commitment to promoting from within, Swinerton aims to hire for entry-level positions whenever possible and invests in employee development through professional training and on-the-job mentoring.

Swinerton is among a few select Hawaii construction companies currently hiring. “We secure steady work and remain profitable because we build for quality first and avoid costly rework. We attract and develop excellent people who want to work with other smart, dedicated and hardworking people who strive for exceptional craftsmanship,” says Ehara.
