Maui Divers Jewelry

“One of the key reasons Maui Divers Jewelry has grown to over 50 locations is because of our team members” says President and CEO Mary Beth Brenner. “We have an amazing staff that shares in the success of Maui Divers through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and wide-ranging benefits. We made our employees co-owners to ensure that the company not only achieves its financial goals but that it does so with a healthy environment that makes people excited about coming to work each day.”

Maui Divers’ diverse team includes professionals in jewelry design, manufacturing, retail and customer service from across Hawaii’s four main islands.

Maui Divers was founded in 1958 in Lahaina, Maui, as a dive shop filling scuba tanks, selling equipment and providing tours.  In 1959, a diving expedition in the deep waters off the Molokai Channel led to the discovery of one of the ocean’s finest treasures, Hawaiian black coral.  Intrigued by the beauty of this rare ocean treasure, Maui Divers’ partners established a company to design, manufacture and sell black coral jewelry.  It has since become Hawaii’s official state gemstone.

From its origin as a jewelry manufacturer and wholesaler, the company opened its first retail store in 1982.  Today, Maui Divers is Hawaii’s largest jewelry designer and retailer with 50 concept locations—Maui Divers Jewelry, Island Pearls, Pick-A-Pearl and Maui Divers Jewelry Luxury Collection—on the four major Hawaiian Islands, and in California and Guam.

In 1997, the owners of Maui Divers elected to form an ESOP, which provides all employees a unique opportunity to share in the profits of the company.  Employees receive shares of company stock — they do not contribute a penny — and this has raised their awareness and commitment to see the company succeed.  Today, as a result of the ESOP, the employees are the largest investor group in the company.

All of these efforts have led Maui Divers Jewelry to be recognized as one of Hawaii’s Best Places to Work for six years in a row.  The company has also received several other honors over the years, including the Business Leadership Hawaii Award – Best in Business for Large Companies, Retailer of the Year and Resort Retailer of the Year.

Maui Divers Jewelry continues to grow in the ever-changing worlds of travel and retail. The company emerged from the recent global recession stronger than ever with renewed vision and enthusiasm. “Great ideas come from all levels of the organization and each employee is encouraged to contribute” says Brenner. “Maui Divers’ future is bright with exciting new product designs, enhanced store environments and service levels. We are dedicated to building on the company’s rich history while meeting the needs and interests of today’s customer.”
