What makes a company one of Hawaii’s Best Places to Work in 2012? Some of this year’s winners share their success stories. They cover all facets of business, from Hawaii’s top construction companies, financial institutions and human resource firms, to non-profit organizations and design consultants, along with some exciting new appearances.
Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union
Aloha Pacific Federal Credit Union is dedicated to the needs of its members first, but the needs of its employees come in at a very close second. That’s one of the reasons Aloha Pacific FCU has won recognition as one of Hawaii’s Best Places to Work for a fourth consecutive year.

Another reason, says President and CEO Wallace Y. Watanabe, is that the same attention to the members translates into a unified, all-embracing goal for the company.
“We are member-focused, and always have been, since the credit union was formed more than 75 years ago. So, as each of us performs our duties, there’s no confusion: We know our ultimate goal is to work for the benefit of our members.”
And, he says, “We have a really great group of employees who enjoy working with each other. They work hard, but they like what they do and they enjoy interacting with our members, too.”
It all makes for a satisfying work environment, amplified by team-building events such as benefit bake sales and the annual Halloween costume contest, in which branches and departments dress up and decorate, hoping to win individual or group prizes. “Our House” was the overall theme of last year’s contest, won by the Kaimuki branch, which designed “Our Beach House” with seashells, beach balls, a surfboard and ocean creatures.
There’s the annual Business Retreat, too, at which all the employees gather to hear about the progress and direction of the credit union and take part in more fellowship-building exercises. And the sense of ohana radiates to the community as staffers volunteer with Lanakila Meals on Wheels, delivering food to seniors in need.

Of course, in every organization, the employee benefits package is very important, and at APFCU, it’s quite generous. It includes:
- Paid family medical insurance; paid employee dental insurance
- 13 paid holidays (14 in election years, such as 2012)
- 401(k) plan (after the first year of employment, APFCU matches 200 percent of the employee’s first 5 percent of salary that is contributed to the plan)

- Paid tuition for industry-related courses
- Leadership and management development opportunities
And as APFCU continues to grow, so do the opportunities. Twenty-five years ago, the credit union had about 30 employees, a single branch/office, and 12,000 members. Today, there are more than 180 employees to staff and support 10 branches (nine on Oahu, one in Las Vegas) and fill the needs of the more than 38,000 members.
This extraordinary growth of the credit union and its staffers is a testament to APFCU’s enduring mission, “Building Lasting Relationships.”
