Atlas Insurance Agency, Inc.
Atlas Insurance lives by the motto, ‘Hawaii is not just a place where we do business, Hawaii is our home.’ Founded in 1929, Atlas Insurance is Hawaii’s largest insurance agency with offices on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Currently employing a workforce of nearly 120 people, the company knows its success is due to their competent and happy employees who provide its clients with extraordinary service.

“We believe business should be about people, and we’ve made strides to ensure that’s a part of our culture. We take care of our employees and our clients – the numbers, they take care of themselves,” says Myles Murakami, president of Atlas Insurance. “We have a great leadership team that understands it’s not how much you know, but how much you care. Our leaders continually look for ways to enrich our employees’ growth, knowledge and opportunities in many unique ways.”
Long-term success for any company depends on having well-trained leaders all marching toward the same goal. “We recently held our third annual Atlas Leadership Institute (an intensive, week-long, leadership training program) for all managers, top down,” says Murakami. “We make significant investments in management training because we believe this is the group that will lead us from ‘good’ to ‘great!’”
Professional development of its entire team continues to take center stage to ensure that employees are consistently indoctrinated into the company’s way of doing business from a technical, procedural and ethical standpoint. Currently, Atlas is the only agency in Hawaii to have a dedicated, full-time professional training and development manager. “In order to exceed our clients expectations, you must have well-trained and happy employees, so the professional development of our team takes center stage at Atlas” says Murakami.
To have happy employees, Atlas practices its mantra of “work hard, play hard” and knows how to have fun. The Office Activities Committee takes the lead in planning company events and activities that are creative and fresh. New team members are selected each year where they get to practice their leadership skills by coordinating individual events. Examples of morale-boosting events: Valentine’s Day treat (where ‘Cupid’ delivered chocolates and roses to all employees), Movie Day (when the office closes and employees are treated to an afternoon of movies and treats), pictures with the Easter Bunny (Murakami-style), and the company’s annual Christmas party, this year with all extended family members invited.
Atlas is also actively involved in numerous community fundraising events every year. The Atlas Insurance Foundation contributes financial support to over 25 non-profit organizations each year. “What makes me the proudest is the fact that Atlas employees will always voluntarily give of their time and money,” says Murakami.” It all comes back to our motto, Hawaii is not just a place where we do business, Hawaii is our home.”
