Nurturing a Community

Growing up with a police officer as a father, Terry Lee is no stranger to living a hardworking life within our community. It’s no wonder, then, that he serves his clientele with the same virtues in mind.

Twenty-four years ago, Lee left his career with Merrill Lynch to start his own business. “I was reading all of these things about people who were working on their own,” Lee says. “I wanted to explore the world of an independently run business,” he says.

In 1988, Lee started Lee Financial Group with just two employees. Since then, the business has grown, now comprising more than 3,000 clients and a close-knit family of 16 employees.

What Lee believes has set this financial advising firm apart from its competitors is an approach that is anything but typical. “We try to take a conservative approach,” Lee says. “We focus on making risk-management a key objective.”

Lee caters to a clientele that wishes to keep their assets a bit more protected. “This market can take a lot of turns. It’s had some really big falls in the past 10 years, which has been uncommon historically, but it happens,” he says. “Our approach attempts to minimize losses by combining a mix of traditional and alternative methods.”

What this means for clients, according to Lee, is that he tries to develop portfolios that are less volatile for both up and down markets. “By lowering volatility, clients may not have significant gains in short amounts of time. It’s more about trying to protect what they have, and trying to achieve a steady growth,” Lee says.

This conservative approach isn’t for everyone, but Lee is a local boy, and his personality evokes a strong desire to take care of his clients. “I want to live on this Island forever,” Lee says. “I don’t want to have to hide if I see someone because something doesn’t pan out. We try to be realistic about the volatility of the markets and try to reduce our client’s exposure to that volatility.”
