Building Quality Homes and Communities for a Better Hawaii

Sandalwood Plan 3 and the interior of Sandalwood Plan 1

Thomas H. Gentry came to Hawaii with a dream to build quality homes and communities for a better Hawaii. His experience in new home design and construction came with him, and today Gentry Homes is a family brand name. Arriving with his young family in the late 1960’s, Tom began to build a vision for a new company that would fulfill his dream and become the largest family owned builder of master plan communities in Hawaii. Although he passed away in 1998, his dream and vision continue as Gentry Homes celebrates its 45th anniversary providing new home ownership to the hard working families of Hawaii.

Tosh Hosoda, Senior Vice President of Planning, has been a key player on the Gentry team for over 30 years and remembers the first communities Gentry built on the Windward side called Kukilakila and Alii Cluster. Others followed like Haiku Point, CrossPointe, Waialae Iki V, Hilo Country Club Estates and Kona Reef on the Big Island. “Tom moved ferociously ahead and caught the attention of Foremost-McKesson, a large Bay area industrial properties firm who wanted a piece of his fortitude and development expertise. They acquired Gentry but it was a relatively small division within a large company. Tom had better ideas and following his mandatory obligation to Foremost-McKesson, formed Gentry Homes, Ltd. and other related companies. It was a smart move as Tom positioned himself as a major Hawaii home builder.”

Gentry moved forward to develop the 510-acre Waipio by Gentry master-planned community in Central Oahu in 1979. As the demand for housing continued to grow Tom began work on the Ewa by Gentry master-planned community which today has over 7,500 homes built with several hundred more to go. Other projects include the Department of Hawaiian Homeland’s Kanehili development where Gentry designed and built over 300 homes. Since its founding date in 1968, Gentry has proudly built over 12,000 homes for Hawaii’s families.

Gentry Homes is still moving forward with today’s technology and is always looking for ways to improve the process and quality of the homes they build. Bob Brant, President of Gentry Homes, and his talented team have proudly introduced the ‘Gentry Green Living’ product line which could be the most energy efficient new homes on the market today. Having earned the Energy Star Housing Award from the EPA, several Parade of Homes Grand Champion awards, and a prestigious LEED Platinum designation in a recent design, “Gentry’s efforts are all about the customer and what they get out of it,” said Brant. “We start from the ground-up and look for ways to add value and save energy with standard features. I’m especially proud to say that each new community we build just keeps getting better. One man’s dream has made all the difference and we are proud to carry on that tradition at Gentry Homes.”
