Corporate Anniversaries 2014: Child & Family Service

Leadership Council at the CFS Ewa Family Center

Since 1899 Child & Family Service (CFS) has been fulfilling its mission of strengthening families and fostering the healthy development of children. As one of our state’s largest private nonprofits, CFS offers more than 35 integrated programs from early childhood development, to family services, to kūpuna care.   CFS helps to strengthen families and communities by addressing serious issues such as abuse and neglect—with life-changing results.

“CFS is a full-service, family-centered organization that serves families in their neighborhoods, where they live and work,” according to Howard Garval, CFS president and CEO. “Our Family Centers on O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Maui, and the Big Island, are a one-stop place for families to receive the support they need to change their lives.  We focus on preventing and treating serious life problems; providing families with tools to sustain their gains for the long term.”

Garval noted that CFS has been serving Hawai‘i for 115 years, thanks to ongoing community support.  “Businesses, individuals, and foundations support many good causes here in Hawai‘i and when they give to CFS, they aren’t choosing between supporting children or the elderly, teens or families, because a gift to CFS can help them all.”

Always seeking to make the most impact on those they serve, CFS employs an organization-wide initiative called Results-Based Accountability (RBA) that asks three questions: How much did we do? How well did we do it? And, is anyone better off?  This performance measurement data allows CFS to identify and track results within every program.   “RBA is a transformative, sustainable initiative that will not only measure the outcomes of our social service programs but will demonstrate long-term impact on the families we serve.” Garval added.
