Coral Andrews,
Executive Director

The Hawaii Health Connector (Connector) will change the way people in Hawaii buy health insurance, and will help small businesses and the state’s uninsured and underinsured residents navigate the purchase of qualified health insurance plans. Nearly 100,000 people in Hawaii are uninsured. Open enrollment for businesses and residents interested in utilizing the Connector begins in October 2013. Visit HawaiiHealthConnector.com for more information.

Q: What is the Hawaii Health Connector?

A: Of Hawaii for Hawaii, the Hawaii Health Connector (Connector) was established as a non-profit organization in 2011 by the Hawaii State Legislature in order to comply with the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. The Affordable Care Act calls for the establishment of health insurance exchanges in every state.

Q: What is a health insurance exchange?

A: “Exchange” is another word for marketplace. Each state will have an online marketplace to serve individuals and small businesses. There are three types of exchanges nationally: State-based, Partnership and Health Insurance Marketplace. In order to keep the Prepaid Health Care Act of 1974 intact, it was necessary for Hawaii to establish a State-based Exchange.

Q: How will the Connector work?

A: The Connector will have the feel of a streamlined online commerce site. Shoppers will be able to pick from a range of private insurance plans and determine eligibility for federal tax subsidies and credits.
