Q: What can companies do to help keep their employees healthy and productive?

A: One of the best investments a company can make is in the health of its employees.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, productivity losses related to personal and family health problems can cost an average of $1,685 per employee per year.  Worksite wellness programs have proven to be an effective way of getting and keeping employees healthy while reducing absenteeism and company health-care losses.

Q: How can companies create an effective worksite wellness program?

A: A good worksite wellness program is specialized to an individual employee’s needs.  One of the most successful programs employed by the U.S. Department of Defense and private businesses offer health evaluations and one-on-one health coaching.  More than 81 percent of participants reported reduced stress, 62 percent reported improved productivity and 72 percent said that because of these benefits, the were more likely to stay with their employer. HMAA’s Wellness for Life plan, a value-added benefit for all HMAA members, includes this same free health assessment and coaching by certified health coaches to help lose weight, quit smoking, manage stress and more.

Q: What are some of HMAA’s new initiatives?

A:  HMAA has joined eleven leading health, wellness and safety-related organizations to form Wellness Alliance Hawaii. It is the first coalition of its kind committed to achieving a healthier Hawaii by sharing health-related information and services with HMAA’s approximately 40,000 members.  It is a powerful complement to our Wellness for Life program and Business Alliance Hawaii. They are value-added services for HMAA members designed to help employers save time and money and help employees get healthy.
