HB Healthcare & Insurance

Howard Lee, President & CEO UHA
In an age when healthcare is becoming more complex and medical services are becoming more expensive for Hawaii’s families and employers, UHA is taking steps to simplify healthcare and uphold its commitment to put members first and to be a partner with employers.
Q: What is UHA doing to make healthcare less expensive?
A: Those who get regular check ups from their physician are often in better health. We’ve found that those who take their health seriously and make a point of following their physician’s recommendations are better off. UHA helps to make it easy for our members to find a personal care physician. We offer the largest network of participating physicians of all the health plans in Hawaii. In fact, more than 95% of the state’s physicians and hospitals participate with UHA.
We also want to encourage employers to develop a healthy workplace; one that encourages good nutrition and daily exercise.
Q: How important are preventive benefits?
A: Prevention is always the best medicine. We encourage our members to take charge of their own health with good nutrition and daily exercise. It’s easier and less costly to prevent sickness instead of treating sickness or disease. We have resources to help our members quit smoking, improve nutrition and maintain a healthy weight. Members with diabetes and asthma can also benefit from daily exercise and good nutrition.
Q: UHA takes a proactive role in caring for its members that is unusual for a health insurance company. What are those services?
A: We strive to keep our members healthy, but when health does fail it is our responsibility to be there with great sick care benefits. Our care management team of physicians and nurses will ensure that our members are getting the right care at the right time; care that is safe, and effective. Our goal is to help our members recover so that they can get back to living a productive life.
