Hawaii's Better Business Bureau: BBB Torch Awards
Each year, the BBB Torch Awards program helps illuminate the importance of a marketplace where buyers and sellers can trust each other. The award recognizes the businesses and public charities that hold themselves to the highest set of ethics and integrity in our marketplace.
Torch Award finalists demonstrate exceedingly high standards of behavior toward customers and employees; adhere to truthful advertising and sales practices; and have a reputation for noteworthy contributions in their industry and community.
Ka Mea O Kako‘o Awardees
As the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs’ (DCCA) Consumer Protection Education Specialist for the past eight years, Jackie has been an advocate for consumers through the development and implementation of consumer education programs. Through these efforts she has been able to reach out to a broad section of consumer throughout the State. She conducts presentations on the Neighbor Islands as well as Oahu, reaching out to seniors and youth alike. Jackie’s successful advocacy programs that utilizes education at its root are the highly successful “LifeSmarts” program and the Department’s Consumer Education Fair. “LifeSmarts” is a consumer education competition open statewide to teens in grades 6-12. The competition tests students on their knowledge of personal finance, health and safety, environment, technology and consumer rights and responsibilities. Jackie has been a one person dynamo coordinating this annual National Consumers League competition, working to find great sponsors like the Hawaii Credit Union League, encouraging and supporting the Coach’s at schools across the State and having in culminate the Hawaii Champions participating in the National Competition.
Theresa Kong Kee
Theresa Kong Kee has been the Investor Education Specialist in the Office of the Securities Commissioner at the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs since 2006. In the last six years, Theresa’s efforts to inform consumers of their rights as investors and to alert them to the best ways to prevent investor fraud has helped the Office of the Securities Commissioner to reach over 190,000 people on our islands from keiki to kupuna. In 2007, she helped the Office of the Securities Commissioner promote a teach-the-teacher investor education outreach to reach keiki through a program based on Native Hawaiian values. In 2008, she helped put together the first Hawaii Fraud Prevention and Resource Guide that lists common frauds in Hawaii and where to get help. In 2009, she initiated the Union Outreach project to target working adults in unions and other working groups to warn them of affinity fraud and to let them know where to get help. This effort was so successful that it evolved into a national outreach campaign sponsored by the North American Securities Administrators’ Association (NASAA).
Because of Theresa’s significant impact on and dedication to Hawaii consumers, she received the NASAA Investor Education Outreach Award in 2007 and the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Service Award in 2008. Theresa graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy, the University of San Diego where she received her Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with honors, and the University of Hawaii-Manoa where she received her Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA).
