Hawaii's Top Employers 2013: Central Pacific Bank

Whether it’s department outings, filming videos for the holiday party, or taking Alex the canine mascot for a cruise in one of the company’s electric-powered vehicles, Central Pacific Bank employees try to keep things fun!

Each year, CPB’s Employee Club organizes a variety of fun activities for employees, including sporting events, drive-in movies, and picnics.  And throughout the year, different leaders in the organization host special events, such as the annual Employee Appreciation luncheon, and Cupcake Wars, where CEO John Dean and his executive team compete in a fun-spirited bake-off for charity.

Being designated a “Best Place to Work” for a fourth year is testament to the culture that Central Pacific Bank (CPB) has worked hard to create.  Sure, CPB offers great perks and benefits that help employees balance their work and personal lives, including paid vacations, incentive compensation programs, and tuition reimbursement.  But what people really enjoy is that CPB is a dynamic company where the executive management team is committed to transparency and the employees know how to have fun.

The company also actively encourages open communications between management and the employees to create an environment of trust: Senior leaders regularly communicate organization-wide messages through the company’s Intranet; executive management holds regular “talk story” sessions with employees; and employee feedback is regularly solicited through surveys and upward appraisals.

Employees also thrive on CPB’s continued commitment to the community.  Last year, 95 percent of the company’s employees volunteered more than 4,500 hours and donated more than $216,000 to charitable causes.

But the crux of what makes CPB an employer of choice is its employees and their dedication.  The employees’ passion for their work, their extraordinary sense of teamwork, and their commitment to the organization is at the heart of some of the bank’s greatest successes. And they themselves are a huge part of the reason the bank is once again a Best Place to Work.
