Celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, the general building contractor offers employees stock ownership as well as a host of other benefits.

“Employees feel empowered to make a difference,” says company president Glen Kaneshige. “They have a personal stake in how well the company performs.”

Nordic PCL’s 180 employees also enjoy a team-focused culture in which they play off of the strengths of one another to build success.

“The culture emphasizes that we work as a team and that the individual supports the needs of others before themselves,” Kaneshige says. “We also emphasize that a great organization cannot exist without integrity and that integrity can only come about if individuals accept taking personal responsibility.”

When looking for new hires, the company seeks individuals who will embrace this type of culture.

“Beyond the skill set required by the employee’s position, attitude becomes a key criterion for selecting and keeping an employee,” Kaneshige says. “’Hire on attitude and train for success’ is a mantra that we adhere to when it comes to building the right team.”

To recognize a job well done, the company bestows the Nordic PCL Advantage Award at company staff meetings.

“This is for the individual who provides exceptional construction services with prompt, personal attention to our client’s needs and concerns,” Kaneshige says.

“For employees who excel at promoting jobsite safety, they are recognized during the company Christmas party and given a cash award with a plaque.”

Nordic PCL recognizes that retaining quality employees is key to retaining success. Beyond health, dental and 401K plans, the company also offers performance bonuses, group life insurance and stock ownership, among other things.

“We provide the training and mentoring so that employees continue to grow, and we also reward and recognize employees when they go above and beyond to do a great job,” says Kaneshige. “We emphasize promoting from within the organization so employees see the opportunity to advance, and we also organize community service activities so that employees have an opportunity to give back.”
