Kapili Construction LLC
Michael Leong knows a thing or two about operating a successful business in Hawaii. The owner/president of Kapili Construction LLC, celebrating its fifth year in business, Leong founded the company in 2007 before establishing the LLC in 2008. Since then, he has seen his business multiply tremendously. “We have steadily grown from $40,000 in volume our first year, to over $2 million in 2010,” Leong says.
Years before establishing his own business, Leong worked in the construction industry as a painter. Eventually, he transitioned into roofing, and he began working with his uncle at David’s Custom Roofing. Leong excelled and climbed the ladder to become vice president. “Having that experience and seeing the potential for success, I started Kapili Construction, which specializes in roofing,” he says.
Kapili Construction LLC began with just two employees, Leong and his wife, operating out of his home. Today, the company employs 15 field workers and four office staff in their new location in Pearl City, which they purchased in September 2011. “[The new location] has really helped to take our business to the next level,” Leong says.
What customers have grown to appreciate are the offerings Kapili Construction is constantly adding to the mix. The company stays up to date on the latest innovations and evolves its product line accordingly.
With a strong demand for environmentally friendly products, Kapili Construction offers incredibly revolutionary products to save energy and money in the long run. “We now install coatings that will cool your roof as well as waterproof it,” Leong says. “Asphalt shingles even offer products that contain reflective granules that will also keep your structure cool.” Looking ahead, Leong plans to include photovoltaic roof shingles as well, which will actually help to generate energy from the sun.
But staying ahead of the game in terms of product line is not the sole driving factor for Kapili Construction’s success. Leong is motivated to operate his business under the same traits one might look for in a best friend: honesty, fairness and trust. “I have always believed that your word is your bond. If you say you will do something, you do it. People can count on us,” Leong says.
It’s no wonder, then, that Kapili Construction’s main source of business comes from referrals from satisfied customers. And with a business that has multiplied 50 times in volume in just five years, we are eager to see the great things in store for the next five.
