Cetra: The Internet of Things
"Technology is converging. Instead of separate systems for data, voice, building controls and security, your company can maintain all of these functions and more on your network."
One of the trends that is transforming the role of IT staff and will profoundly change the way companies do business in the future is the idea of the “Internet of Things.” Technology is rapidly evolving and machine-to-machine communication will be pervasive. Every “thing” or object in your business will be linked through your network and the Internet.
“Technology is converging. Instead of separate systems for data, voice, building controls and security, your company can maintain all of these functions and more on your network,” says Michael McMurdo, president of Cetra Technology. “The companies that take advantage of these new technologies are able to streamline operations, increase productivity and gain valuable business insight to stay ahead in the marketplace.”
For example, a doctors’ office enters a prescription and the computer then checks an online database to make sure the drugs being prescribed work for the patient based on the patient’s health information. The computer also double-checks for any interaction with other drugs the patient may already be taking and even checks with pharmacies to see if the patient has the drug through another source. In the meantime, the doctor receives the results of blood tests from the lab and results from other sources in a matter of minutes.
Another Cetra customer rents out heavy equipment embedded with sensors that “call home” when the oil needs changing or the machine is running too hot. “Imagine the value this has when renting out a $100,000 piece of equipment and the user has not bothered to read the gauges,” said McMurdo.
“At Cetra we joke about our ‘One Neck to Choke’ philosophy,” he said. “But we seriously believe in being responsible for all the technology that touches a client’s network. This is very important because anything that touches the network can profoundly affect it. We are committed to providing 100 percent of a company’s technology needs at a fixed price so we are motivated to fix things right and fix things fast.”
