“Who used cloud computing today?” Jay Jurick, Founder of TurnOnTech, asks students at the University of Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific University where he is a guest lecturer on information technology topics. His question is mostly met with blank stares. “Well, who used Facebook or Gmail this morning?” he prods. Suddenly, the light bulbs go on and the hands go up. “That’s the cloud,” says Jurick, “and I think it’s now the world we live in.”
When Jurick started TurnOnTech in 2004, he realized that many companies lacked business processes and applications to centralize key data. “Some people, for example, conduct customer relationship management out of Outlook or on their phone,” says Jurick, “But if the company doesn’t actually own or have full access to that kind of data, that’s a blind spot and a risk.” He quickly realized that cloud computing was a solution to this and other challenges. In the case of customer relationship management, sales agents can enter client information into company databases not only from their computers but also fromtheir smart phones, Chromebooks, or iPads.

Jurick sees cloud computing as a natural fit for distribution, project-based, and service companies. TurnOnTech is often responsible for transitioning small to mid-sized businesses to cloud computing platforms for all their business processes, and Jurick says that that the transition can take as little as 60 days, depending on the complexity of the business. TurnOnTech designs systems that are flexible in meeting the unique business needs of a broad range of industries.
Most businesses, says Jurick, are already using the cloud on some level, even if only for smaller applications such as social media or collaboration. Eventually though, many companies will save time and money using more advanced cloud applications which includes critical business data like accounting and financial information. Jurick points out to potential clients that there is a big difference between checking a mobile cloud application and being able to say, “There’s 20 in the warehouse right now, do you want me to hold them for you?” versus “Let me check on inventory when I get back to the office.”
