Lyon Associates

Celebrates 50 Years; Work Spans 50 Countries. Improving Island Life.

"Improving Island Life” is the mantra at Lyon Associates, as the Hawai‘i-based firm marks its golden anniversary. The international consultancy offers planning, engineering and construction management.

Lyon Associates, Inc. is family owned and locally operated. Its team works on all the Hawaiian Islands and has projects and/or offices in Guam, Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, American Samoa, Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. Lyon Associates deals with seven different currencies and the team embraces the complexity of doing business internationally.

“This anniversary milestone exceeds any expectation we had for our family business,” said Frank E. Lyon, Jr., Lyon Associates founder and chairman. “Our commitment to maintain a local focus and operate internationally has allowed us to improve the quality of life for islanders.
“Over the 50 years, we’ve been privileged to work with clients improving infrastructure and upgrading facilities to give island and coastal communities, throughout the Pacific, Asia, Middle East and Africa a better quality of life.”

Lyon Associates’ Honolulu headquarters was established in 1972. Among its 120 diverse and dynamic employees there are more than 10 languages spoken. They specialize in infrastructure, transportation, commercial and residential projects for the government and private sectors.

Frank Lyon was working in Asia when he and a group of senior personnel from the Far East Division of his predecessor firm organized Lyon Associates in 1961. His son, Jim Lyon, became president in 2007.

“My Dad’s philosophy to apply Hawai‘i-based solutions to maintain a wide and varied work portfolio has positioned Lyon Associates for some of the most important and exciting work at home and across the Pacific Rim,” said Jim Lyon. “It’s a dream come true for us to be working on issues as important as disaster preparedness and climate change, and, to be doing this work in 17 island locations.”

Father and son stress creativity as a key ingredient for building a successful business, especially on an island.

“Living on island can be tough. We built a company that’s focused on island-specific solutions,” said Jim, “The planning and design our engineers do every day is squarely focused on our mantra: Improving Island Life.”
