McDonaldʻs Restaurants of Hawaii
McDonald’s of Waikele completed a major remodel in 2012.
For nearly 45 years, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii has held its position as one of the state’s largest restaurant chains, with a long-standing philosophy of supporting the local community.
Since opening its first store in aina haina in 1968, McDonald’s has grown to 75 restaurants statewide, located on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. They include franchises run by 13 owner/operators.
Today the company provides nearly 14,000 local jobs and has an annual economic impact – directly and indirectly – of $370 million in spending in Hawaii. Offering career opportunities with training, education and incentives, it’s little wonder the average McDonald’s employee in Hawaii stays with the company for more than 18 years – 2.5 times the national average.
The company’s team of regional staff, together with its local owner/operators, and external design and construction teams, work together to ensure McDonald’s restaurants statewide remain relevant and contemporary to best meet the needs of their customers.

Since 2005, in efforts to serve both its customers and the community, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii has invested in complete rebuilds or renovations of its existing restaurants, while continuing to seek new development opportunities. In 2012, corporate and franchise owners worked together, pooling their business insights and experiences to remodel seven well-established Hawaii restaurants and open two new restaurants. The company has now invested over $200 million in restaurant improvements statewide. Sixty-eight percent of its restaurants have been rebuilt or renovated and there are more to go. In 2013, the regional team has its sights set on completing six remodels, two rebuilds, and breaking ground for two new restaurants.
Using best practices and technologies – as well as local contractors – the company’s renovation and development process focuses on creating a design that is consistent with its brand with the opportunity to integrate local graphics unique to each store’s community. Eco-friendly features also are incorporated into each of the store renovations and rebuilds, including the use of energy-efficient kitchen equipment, water-efficient fixtures, new thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing systems, LED lighting and use of recycled materials such as chairs made of reused Coca-Cola bottles.

In addition to improving its restaurants, McDonald’s is dedicated to enriching its communities. Nearly 43 cents of every dollar spent at McDonald’s in Hawaii is returned to the local economy.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii is the company’s charity of choice, and year-round fundraising through coin collection canisters and various in-store promotions raises over $225,000 annually to support RMHC-Hawaii. The company supports many other family-friendly events and organizations in Hawaii, too, most notably leading a statewide effort to support the development of the first Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Hawaii with a lead grant of $300,000 in 2011. The center opened in Kapolei in 2012.
On an individual level, most Hawaii McDonald’s restaurants support their local schools, youth activities, sports teams, churches and other community organizations through fundraising and contributions.

With several new restaurants opening in the near future, McDonald’s is on a steady course to continue serving Hawaii’s communities with quality food and customer service.

Highlights of recent renovation and development projects.
McDonald’s of Waipio
McDonald’s of Waipio completed a full redesign in 2011, including a refreshed, contemporary interior and a new exterior featuring warm earth-tone colors. The renovation added a two-lane drive-thru and more seats in and outside the restaurant. It was the only restaurant in the country to be recognized for its success by Jan Fields, president of McDonald’s USA, at the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention in April 2012.
McDonald’s of Kona Commons
McDonald’s opened its most energy-efficient restaurant in the state at Kona Commons on Hawaii Island in March 2012. It features LED lights, Energy Star freezers and icemakers, and high-efficiency warming cabinets and cooking equipment; a low-consumption walk-in refrigerator; a self-regulating air conditioning system; and cool roof technology.
McDonald’s of Lahaina
McDonald’s of Lahaina opened in 1983. In 2012, a complete rebuild of the decades-old store maximized the site’s operational potential, increased storage capacity and added more accessibility to the store’s dining room and drive-thru. The store captures the spirit of its historic Lahaina Town location with a “Western Style” roofline and wide grid windows.
McDonald’s of Waikele
Effectively transforming the look and feel of the customer and crew experience, McDonald’s completed a major remodel of the McDonald’s of Waikele in 2012. In order to modernize the nearly 20-year-old store, McDonald’s updated the restaurant with a contemporary McDonald’s arcade façade, an inviting interior décor accented with local graphics that celebrate the past to today, an upgraded drive-thru experience, LED lighting, and improved indoor and outdoor dining.
