The Baby Boomer generation is reaching senior status (if they haven’t already), and the people who came after them are not far behind. Approximately 20 percent of our total population is made up of people ages 60 and older, according to Darlene Canto, director of marketing for senior living community Kāhala Nui. That number is projected to grow even more in 10 years, when it’s estimated to reach 25 percent. In Hawaii, the elderly population is growing even faster than the rest of the nation, according to healthtrends.org. Senior living affects us all.

“This results in a plethora of needs from wellness programs to dealing with end of life issues,” Canto says.

With that number continually climbing, experts recommend planning ahead. The time to start is now. This means taking steps in a number of arenas, such as residential needs, health and finance.
