Top 250: HMAA
(Hawaii Medical Assurance Association)
John Henry Felix, chairman, president and CEO of HMAA, implemented a series of innovative solutions at the leading health insurance provider to help businesses save time and money.
When it comes to health insurance, HMAA (Hawaii Medical Assurance Association) is anything but typical.
First off, the company, which has become known throughout the state as a leading provider of superior health insurance benefits for small, medium-sized and larger employers, incorporates aspects into its medical plans that you may not find in others.
“Many of HMAA’s medical plans include alternative benefits such as acupuncture, chiropractic and naturopathic care,” says John Henry Felix, company chairman, president and CEO.
Their uncommon approach to health insurance doesn’t stop there. They have also created programs that offer exceptional pricing as well.
“Last year, HMAA created a new division, Business Alliance Hawaii, to provide our 40,000 members with value-added products and services at rates that would normally only be made available to larger businesses,” Felix says. “These services include tax preparation and business support services; identity theft and legal protection; information technology security; and human resources support, payroll, benefits and payment solutions.”
This progressive approach is the result of a dynamic vision incorporated in the company by founder Arnold Baptiste Sr., who founded HMAA in 1989.
“Arnold had his roots in a working-class family on Kauai. His aloha for the community shaped the way he did business,” Felix says. “As a result, our two-decade-plus tradition of giving back to the community is written into HMAA’s charter and has been woven into the company’s DNA from the very beginning.”
Baptiste’s roots are part of the reason why the company offers members participation in their Wellness for Life program at no extra cost. “The program provides individual coaching and health consultation from certified health experts to develop customized wellness plans and life-health assessments,” Felix says. “The program also features interactive online tools as well as the opportunity for incentives and discount programs.”
Felix credits Baptiste with recognizing the need for a health insurer to provide small businesses, which account for the overwhelming majority of Hawaii’s employers, with affordable health plans that may have previously only been affordable to larger companies.
This idea is reflected in the company’s mantra, “Healthy employees equal healthy businesses” and it remains at the heart of HMAA’s operations.
“Arnold’s vision was to provide more than health insurance alone. He wanted to help small to mid-sized businesses save time and money,” Felix says.
HMAA continually strives to meet and exceed this goal by offering innovative health care plans and value-added products and services through affiliates of its new division Business Alliance Hawaii, such as workforce webinar training, digital and social media support, and much more.
“We’re building on the foundation Arnold Baptiste, Sr. created,” Felix says. “Since its founding more than 20 years ago, HMAA has worked to bring benefits to the community that have made our growth and success possible.”
