Top 250: North Hawaii Community Hospital
North Hawaii Community Hospital.
North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) proudly celebrates its “sweet 16” birthday in 2012. Based on recent efforts, the hospital has much to celebrate. NHCH has taken improving patient care seriously – from recruiting more physicians to focusing on patient satisfaction to upgrading medical equipment. Patients in North Hawaii now have the benefit of new digital mammography equipment for detecting and diagnosing breast diseases, an orthopedic clinic, a Native Hawaiian Health clinic, new state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a clinical care team that has earned the American Heart Association’s Gold Quality Achievement Award for its work to prevent recurrence in heart failure patients.
NHCH’s new Breast Health Program offers patients access to the latest cutting edge technology, a more comfortable experience, faster result analysis and on-going support, in coordination with Hawaii’s new self-referral law which took effect on July 1st, 2012. One of the advantages of the new digital mammography machine is that it exposes patients to less radiation, yet still provides instantaneous imaging. Mammography results are produced much more quickly, helping to decrease patient anxiety. In addition, should an abnormality be discovered during a patient’s screening mammography, hospital radiologists are now able to expedite any additional testing and, if necessary, perform a minimally-invasive biopsy to establish a diagnosis during a routine mammogram. “Our new Breast Health Program is designed to minimize patient anxiety by providing rapid and accurate diagnosis close to home,” says Ken Wood, President and CEO of NHCH. With the addition of these advanced screening technologies and a more efficient and convenient screening experience for patients, the hospital hopes early detection and proactive treatment will become easier for North Hawaii’s residents.
NHCH’s Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure program is significant for both patients and the NHCH care team. The award means that NHCH has been proven to provide care based on the latest scientific guidelines, which increase survival rates and lower patients’ risk of ending up back in the hospital. Studies also credit the program with reductions in deaths within 30 days of leaving the hospital.
After 16 years of serving the North Hawaii community, the hospital continues to strive to fulfill its mission “to improve the health status of the people of North Hawaii by improving access to care and providing high quality services at a reasonable cost”. With new added services, technologies and techniques for clinical care, breast cancer detection, and heart failure prevention, North Hawaii Community Hospital continues to move forward in the ever-changing medical field.
