NO PUBLIC ACCESS IN NEW KAKAAKO

Please take a look at this Web site (www.kakaakowaterfront.org) and see for yourself what the state is trying to build literally right under our noses. The Kaka'ako project ["The Crowing of Kaka'ako," September 2005] will feature three towers for high-end condo and a water front promenade that reminds me of a larger scale Aloha Tower and would no doubt be as much of a flop.

But the worst thing of all is that this is truly the last stretch of area left on the south side that local people could gain access to the ocean with out tripping over tourist. If you read the project vision you will see such terms like "Hawaiian lifestyle" and "public access to ocean shoreline." Well, take a good look at the site plan and tell me how I m going to get my canoe, surfboard, fishing gear, or myself for that matter through that cluttered mess of urban waterfront nightmare to the ocean. There s no public access and this does not represent "Hawaiian lifestyle." Hawaiians aren t asking for more shopping and restaurants for tourist, we are asking for a place to gain access to the ocean and the shoreline.

If you could provide comments about this project please send it into the location on the Web site. The developers and the state are looking to fast track this project and put it up before anyone can even digest its effect. You may be thinking that since you don t live or work in town, who cares right? Wrong... today Kaka'ako, tomorrow Hale'iwa, Kailua, Kalaeloa, or Kane'ohe.
