Crazy Shirts' Crazy Dyes

The real things are part of the company's money, Kona coffee and chocolate shirts

For people who love the feel of money, Crazy Shirts lets them wear it on their backs.

The dye in their money T-shirt incorporates shredded currency from the Federal Reserve, says Eunice Chang, marketing assistant at the company’s Aiea headquarters. “There (were) a lot of restrictions on usage. We were in constant contact with the Feds starting up this project,” says Chang.

Like actual money, the shirts are a muted green.

“Money” is just one of Crazy Shirts’ many specialty dyes that evoke the company’s motto: “Be Original. Be Crazy.” The specialty line started in 1996 with the company’s Kona-coffee-dyed items and includes T-shirts, shorts, twill pants and even sandals in some dyes.

Among the other specialty dyes:

  • The Kona coffee and chocolate dyes have fragrances that last about four to five laundry cycles;
  • The dye in “Crater” uses real volcanic ash; and
  • “The beer dye is perfectly brewed to a golden shade of pale ale,” Chang says.
