For people who love the feel of money, Crazy Shirts lets them wear it on their backs.
The dye in their money T-shirt incorporates shredded currency from the Federal Reserve, says Eunice Chang, marketing assistant at the company’s Aiea headquarters. “There (were) a lot of restrictions on usage. We were in constant contact with the Feds starting up this project,” says Chang.
Like actual money, the shirts are a muted green.
“Money” is just one of Crazy Shirts’ many specialty dyes that evoke the company’s motto: “Be Original. Be Crazy.” The specialty line started in 1996 with the company’s Kona-coffee-dyed items and includes T-shirts, shorts, twill pants and even sandals in some dyes.
Among the other specialty dyes:
- The Kona coffee and chocolate dyes have fragrances that last about four to five laundry cycles;
- The dye in “Crater” uses real volcanic ash; and
- “The beer dye is perfectly brewed to a golden shade of pale ale,” Chang says.
