When Cheryl Nishita, VP and director of marketing at Hawaii National Bank, leaves work each day, she joins friends and teammates with Pacific Fitness Design to train for triathlons.

For most of 2012, Nishita trained seven days a week for Ironman Cozumel, a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run in Mexico on Dec. 1, 2012. That was Nishita’s first full Ironman, but she’s been training and competing in triathlons and other events ever since a friend persuaded her to sign up for the Honolulu Tinman in 2002.

“I was a couch potato. He told me it would be fun, so I signed up,” Nishita says.

That first triathlon has gotten her off the couch and out of the house nearly every day since. Training takes a big chunk of time, so Nishita likes to get up early on weekends to train with friends while her family sleeps in. With one daughter off at college and a supportive husband who does all the cooking, Nishita admits she’s very lucky.

Of the three legs of the triathlon, she says, “My favorite part is riding the bike. I like the speed.”

She also likes the camaraderie. “The triathlon community is full of happy, fit and energetic people who are always willing to share advice and help each other succeed, whether in life or in triathlon.”
