| Interesting Fact: | In the past year, Castle Medical Center established a New Graduate Program to assist in the integration of newly licensed registered nurses into the workplace. Ten new graduate nurses have been assimilated into the organization through this mentoring program to date. Additional program participants will be selected to enter the program in the latter part of this year. |

| Best Practices #1: | A unique practice the organization supports is empowerment for all associates. One way this is done is a form of the SHARE Aloha Recovery coupons. Any staff member has the authority to choose $7, $15, $30 service recovery coupons to assist in resolving a customer service issue. The associate can also choose to use the coupon to purchase a gift for the patient-family member; or give the coupon to the patient-family member for them to select their own gift. At no time is the associate required to ask permission to use the coupon or required to justify their decision to use a coupon. The Hospital also designates eight holidays and staff who work any of the eight holidays receive a holiday premium equal to one and a half times their base rate. Staff also receive a $1 weekend differential for all hours worked from Friday night 10:30 p.m. through 7:30 a.m. Monday morning. |

| Best Practices 2: | Commitment to Castles mission, vision, and values is inherent in all forms of leadership communication behavior. Applicants are introduced to Castles history and mission through a video prior to interview. Organizational values are reinforced by our President-CEO who attend an opening session of General Orientation. In fact, the entire morning of General Orientation is dedicated to informing new staff of our culture, including our focus on customer service in the form of our SHAREAloha Program, Castle Quality approach to teamwork. Additional mechanisms used by leaders to communicate values, directions, and expectations include leadership orientation; new physician orientation; hospital publiscations; midnight express (after hours visits by leadership staff); annual strategic planning retreats; open forums; serving as role models; performance appraisal system; hospital Intranet; Groupwise Email; monthly Director meetings provide leadership updates and strategy changes in regard to short-term and long-term goals. Directors then communicate pertinent updates and changes in their staff meetings. The communication between all components of the leadership system, each leader is a member of multiple teams across the organization. This cross-membership minimizes communication gaps and optimizes opportunities for sharing and learning together, thus enhancing leaders ability to set, communicate, and implement organizational values, performance expectations, and a focus on creating and balancing value for patienets, their families, and other customers. In addition, a VoiceCare system was introduced in January 2006 - Vocera - voice activated, hands-free communication device for front-line staff. Staff can communicate freely with each other while caring for our patients. |
