Interesting Fact:In the summer, the firm took all its personnel out for a day of golf and spa activities at the Ihilani Resort and Spa. Each person was given a $150 to spend at the resort. At the end of the day, the employees met for dinner and formal service awards were presented to personnel reaching 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service.
Best Practices #1:All of our senior level management group, including the principals, are encouraged to attend leadership training sessions each year in Hawaii or on the mainland. The firm pays for any training attended, including travel costs incurred. The firm also hires outside consultants to present leadership training sessions for personnel. Personnel are also encouraged to join outside organizations and to be active in a leadership role on these boards.
Best Practices 2:At least once a year, we try to plan an activity for personnel and their families. Usually we have a picnic in the summer with food, games for the children, swimming, and games for adults. The firm pays for all expenses. In addition, our personnel can bring a guest to the annual holiday celebration. We are very flexible when personnel need time off to attend parent-teacher conferences, school events, or when they need to care for a family member. We allow personnel to take time off whenever necessary, even during our busy audit and tax seasons.
Differentiating Practice:Earlier this year, we held a week-long Employee Appreciation Week where we did something for our personnel on each day. On Day 1, we got together for breakfast and were served by the principals of the firm. The next day, we initiated the NandK Bucks Program. Each time an employee exhibits positive behavior that shows he/she is living the culture we have established, the person receives an NandK buck. Bucks are given for client servicing, teamwork, participating in outside events such as charity functions or club activities, serving on an external board, assisting with firm functions, receiving praise from a client, or promoting the firm. On the third day, we sent letters of appreciation to each persons family, spouse, or significant other. On day 4, we had a random act of kindness day where we each did something nice for another person. On day 5, we again got together for a lunch. We will do something similar this coming year. In the summer, the firm took all personnel for a day of golf and spa activities at the Ihilani Resort and Spa. Each person was given a $150 to spend at the spa, golf, or tennis. At the end of the day, we all met for dinner and had a great time! We also present formal service awards to personnel reaching 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service. Also, personnel achievements are recognized at our division and firm meetings, on our employee Intranet regularly and also in memos via email.
