Resolutions for the New Year

eat right
Whether you live in Kahala, Kailua or Kakaako, you’re never more than a stone’s throw from a healthy food joint. Some of our readers’ favorite healthy eats in the aforementioned areas include Lanikai Juice Co., Umeke Market (which happens to neighbor the wholesome Great Harvest Bread Co.) and Kulia Grill on the UH med school campus.

fit in fitness
Whether it’s an ocean sport or an indoor activity, there’s no better place to get your blood pumping than Hawaii. And don’t worry about calorie counting or running so many miles an hour. If you just commit to breaking a sweat at least once a day, you’ll not only look better, but feel better too.

just kidding around
Put down the PDA, shut off the cell and head for the border. Well, not necessarily Taco Bell, but that’s where Connie and Russell Lau, one of Hawaii’s most industrious power couples, choose to spend QT with their three kids each week. Whether it’s an all-day affair at the water park or Sunday brunch, deliberately dedicating time for your family is a must do.

learn something new
Golf, Schmolf. Make 2006 the year you stop trying to improve your backswing and start trying something you’ve never done before. Learn to ride a motorcycle, take a course in glassblowing or study lua, the ancient Hawaiian art of self-defense. And don’t forget to check out the local colleges’ continuing education programs. They’ve got everything from flower arranging to ballroom dancing.

volunteer
If you’re reading this magazine, there’s a good chance you’re already engaged in community service. But if you aren’t, you should be. Not only is volunteering fun and meaningful, it’s also an integral part of doing business in Hawaii. If you need a place to start, visit Volunteerhawaii.org.
