The Shops at Mauna Lani on the Kohala Coast is now home to the state’s only “4-D theater.” Movies shown on the 19-foot widescreen by twin HD projectors are synchronized with full-range motion seats, a surround-sound system and effects such as blowing air and water sprays.

Movies include “Sponge Bob Squarepants: The 4-D Ride,” “National Geographic: Sea Monsters 4D – A Prehistoric Adventure” and “Alien Safari,” among others. Bill Borkan, owner of The Shops at Mauna Lani, says, “You don’t have to be in Los Angeles or Tokyo to have a state-of-the-art thrill ride. We created another place to have fun and experience something unique on the Big Island.”

Borkan says the 24-seat theater offers affordable, family fun for kamaaina and visitors similar to the popular “Back to the Future” ride at Universal Studios. The $500,000 theater is also available for children’s parties.
