Cause and Effect

Maui |
With gasoline prices on the Valley Isle exceeding $4.40 (and climbing), its residents are boarding the bus system in increasing numbers. With two months remaining in the fiscal year, bus ridership has surpassed FY2007’s total ridership by 300,000.
Wayne Boteilho, deputy director of Maui County Deptartment of Transportation, says they were expecting more riders than 2007, “but not this much.” Ridership has been growing along with the bus fleet, which received four buses in March. The two-year-old bus system now has 30 buses, with two more on the way, Boteilho says.
Bus fares remain free in Central Maui and $1 for the rest of the island.
