Portable Media Players That Don’t Start with I

Toshiba Gigabeat S

With a 2.4-inch LCD screen and a graceful "Plus Touch" navigation button, the media player is a showstopper. The Gigabeat S features up to 60 GB of storage, an FM tuner and enough battery life to listen to 20 hours of audio or view five hours of video. The player can also download media from Microsoft Media Center PCs and audio from the Xbox 360. Toshiba Gigabeat S, 30 GB: $299; 60 GB: $399

Creative Zen Vision: M

At first glance, the Creative Zen Vision: M looks an awful lot like the ubiquitous iPod. However, the Zen Vision: M has a few surprises of its own, including a 2.5-inch color screen and 30 GB of storage space. The Vision: M isn't all play and no work. The player's personal organizer syncs with Microsoft Outlook. Creative Zen Vision: M, 30 GB: $329.99

LG PM70

The PM70 has a head-turning 4.3 inch, 16:9 ratio screen, which is the perfect platform for viewing movies in widescreen and displaying its Windows Portable Media Center. With its multiple controls, stereo speakers and handy kickstand, the PM70 is a true multi-media center. The player also has 30 GB of storage, enough room for up to 7,500 songs, 3,000 music videos, 50 hours of TV or movies or up to 45,000 photos. LG PM70: $547

Samsung YM-PD1

With a spare, boxy profile and straightforward push-button controls, YM-PD1 won't win many design awards. However, gadget freaks will be more impressed with the player's video creds. The YM-PD1 is compatible with MPEG-4, DivX, XviD, AVI and WMV video formats. In addition, the YM-PD1 also works as a video recorder, connecting directly to your TV. Samsung YM-PD1, 20 GB: $382; 30 GB: $477

Sony PSP

The Sony PSP is still the most comprehensive personal media player on the market. Besides being a formidable game console, it boasts one of the largest and most brilliant video screens in the business, as well as built-in stereo speakers and a UMD (Universal Media Disc) drive, which can play back full-length video and hours of music. Last summer, Sony upgraded the PSP's firmware, adding an Internet browser and wireless capability. Sony PSP: $249
