Food Court in Waikiki
By Cathy S. Cruz-George

Fast-food options are expanding in Waikiki, thanks to 10 new eateries scheduled to open next month in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center’s new food court, the Pa’ina Lanai. One of them will be Tacone Flavor Grill, a 12-year-old California company specializing in sandwich wraps, quesadillas, grilled platters and salads. It is the company’s first Hawaii location and one of 150 in development across the country.
Other restaurants scheduled to go into the 7,500-square-foot court are Panda Express, Salad Creations, Kenny’s Hawaiian Express, Ezogiku, Yummy’s Korean BBQ, Sbarro, Maui Tacos and Paradise Café.
The food court will seat 270 diners and show cultural programming on seven mounted plasma screens. A Hawaiian theme will be reflected in the menu boards, ceiling fans and natural lighting. “This will be a specialty food court design where customers feel like they are walking into one restaurant, having a choice of many menu selections,” says Helene “Sam” Shenkus, marketing director for The Festival Cos., which helped to design the food court.
