Seeking Super-Food Status

Photo: Rae Huo

Local chefs have been using sea asparagus for years, often as a garnish or salad. More recently, many have been touting the exotic vegetable, which is hydroponically grown in Kahuku by Marine AgriFuture, as the next great super food. Owner Dr. Wenhao Harold Sun says the sea asparagus, or olakai, is rich in vitamins, amino acids and minerals. He says it also has the potential to reduce cholesterol, improve complexion, boost energy, strengthen the immune system and aid in weight loss. Sun sells the sea asparagus raw, pickled, lomi style or as a seasoning powder at most farmers’ markets around town. For more information and sea asparagus recipes, visit
