Coastal Windows opened its doors in 1990, but the idea of designing windows and doors specifically for Hawaii actually began more than two years earlier. Coastal’s founders, Kurt and Marie Winner, were living part-time in their oceanfront Poipu condo and needed to replace their corroded, inoperable aluminum windows. But all that was available locally were aluminum and wood windows. “They just couldn’t imagine replacing their windows, simply to have them corrode all over again,” says company President Bob Barrett, the Winner’s son. “You have to understand, my Dad had vinyl window manufacturing businesses on the mainland. He knew first-hand that there were much better building materials out there.”
Kurt took to the drawing board and engineered a completely new window system specifically for Hawaii; designed to last, even in the harshest tropical environment. He knew the best place to manufacture a product designed for Hawaii, was in Hawaii. So in 1990 the Winner family, including their sons and daughters-in-law, made the permanent move from the East Coast to Oahu. The family set up manufacturing in the Waipio Gentry Business Park, and introduced their first two products – the Coastal Sliding Window and the Coastal Sliding Lanai Door.
Fast forward 24 years, and the Coastal family has grown from seven employees in that original 5000 sq.ft. – to over 50 employees in 30,000 sq.ft. of showroom, office, and manufacturing. The Winner’s have long since retired, but their sons and daughters-in law have continued on in the family business – expanding their product line to include windows and doors in every style imaginable. “We work closely with local architects, designers, builders and homeowners to continually improve our product performance, and develop new, innovative products for the islands,” says Bob. This year Coastal introduced their newest window system, CoastalGard™ impact-resistant windows and doors.
Recognized over the years for their design innovation, and dedication to their employees and the surrounding community, Coastal holds several patents and has earned a number of community and industry awards. This year Bob was selected as the SBA’s Small Business Person of the Year. “It’s a team effort and we’ve got a great team,” says Bob.
Coastal Windows will celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2015. “We’ve come a long way since those first two products, but our goals have remained the same,” says Bob. “To design and manufacture the best window and door products for the islands, while maintaining our strong commitment to family and this community we proudly call home.”
