Judge's Comments: At a time when health care is at the fore of national debate, Dennis Hollier’s piece on competition among Hawaii’s insurers sheds light on how the state has some of the highest rates of coverage and the lowest costs of care in the nation. He examines the consequences of state-enacted regulations and explains the risk Hawaii citizens face in allowing one insurer to reign."

Shara Enay was a finalist in the same category for September 2009’s "Hidden gems to help you" about government programs useful to small businesses.

Wes Funai won first place for magazine page design for April 2009’s "Best Places to Work: And the Winners are ... "
Judge's Comments: Winner was a very clean design with excellent use of drop-in photographs, judicious Photoshop work and meticulous use of white space. The addition of the graphs and photos that weren’t shot too tight gives the viewer some room to breathe.

Jason Ubay was a finalist in the magazine short feature category for January 2009’s “Obama Presidency.”

In the category of Editorial Cartoon/Illustration for any type of publication, freelancer Carlo Carbajal was a finalist for April 2009’s illustration of "The Perfect Office" (which also won a Pa’i award earlier this year).

In feature photography in any publication, freelancer Olivier Koning won for March 2009’s "Talk Story with Dean Okimoto"

Also, Honolulu magazine won one first place and two finalist awards, and Hawaii magazine won a first place and a finalist award.
