Though they appear and even sound simple by name, modern tugboats are sophisticated vessels costing several million dollars. In addition to Hawaiian Tug & Barge, there are fewer than a half-dozen tugboat companies in the state escorting our cargo ships in and out of port, not to mention oil tankers and cruise ships. All of them, on occasion, need the gentle, and sometimes harsh, push of the precise and powerful tug.
